Our little Monkey is growing up fast. His room is rather small approximately 10.5′ x 10.5′ and boxy, and truth be told I never put much effort into designing his room, unlike Big Boy’s room. When we moved in I bought him a bed with drawers to maximize storage, but that’s pretty much all he got new. Everything else in his room was reused from other rooms. But as he grows and develops, I’ve noticed that he prefers to sit in a chair and play on a high surface or desk. But I ask you, what 3 year old usually has a big boy desk? So, of course he doesn’t really play in his room. I want to change that and want to bring in a desk to lure him to play in his room, but with such a small space I really need to maximize function.
I’m drawn to something like this for function:
And I’m liking the charm and freshness of this design:
My plan is to marry the function of the first and the design of the second, into something beachy and preppy fit for a boy… not a baby, not a toddler… a boy.
This is what I’ve come up with for my design:
I love the idea of the room feeling beachy since Monkey is a total water baby, see here and with a room that is small and the floors dark, I need to keep things light. While I love the navy kite rug in the inspiration photo, it would just end up being dark on dark. I think a graphic yellow rug adds some punch, plus I love yellow. I will also need a good dose of white to go with his existing bed, but need to balance it out with wood, to bring in an organic element. While I love the Saarinen like chair and the bentwood pendant, every purchase will need to be weighed in the context of overall cost. This is a kid’s room after all. Hope I can find a few bargains to splurge on other items.
