For our April date, I had planned to go kayaking and eat oysters, but after some discussion we decided to change plans. In dating, as in life, I think it is important to be flexible. So, instead we set out to explore the Russian River. The kayaks pictured above, were used by others, but we plan to be back and use them ourselves. Honestly I had no idea of the beauty that awaited us just a short 1 hour and 30 minute drive from the house. It was like another world from the bucolic farms, to the awe inspiring coast, and cool river towns.
We started the day early, so our first stop was at Big Bottom Market in downtown Guerneville. We had yummy coffee and super fresh pastries served to us by hip baristas. When I say hip, I mean the decor, clients and baristas would not be out of place in Brooklyn, Portland or any other hipster mecca of the world. I wasn’t expecting that level of hipness in a sleepy river town… but what do I know.
We meandered through Forestville, Guerneville, and Monte Rio all lovely river towns with their own riverside beaches. If I’d known the weather was going to be so spectacular I would have come prepared wearing shorts and a swimsuit. Alas I was wearing jeans and boots, so I stayed away from the river banks and instead hit a couple of garage sales. About 15 minutes away from Monte Rio we hit Jenner and made another stop, this time at Cafe Aquatica, pictured below.
Jenner is located right at the intersection of the Russian River and the Pacific Ocean. Cafe Aquatica gives you and opportunity to stop, eat yummy organic food, and enjoy the breathtaking views Jenner has to offer. An unexpected treat was listening to the talented live musicians, while beholding the incredible views. It really felt like we had discovered a little slice of paradise, so we just sat there for a long time listening to the mellow, Santana-esque music, diving into the views and basking in the sun.
It was a simple, mostly improvised date, but it was perfect. We will definitely be back and next time we will even bring the kids to enjoy the family friendly river beaches.
